Jurand was born in Zygodowice, Poland on April 8, 1941 and passed away on January 16, 2024 in Westborough, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n
Jurand spent his formative years in Wadowice and graduated from the Teacher’s College in Krakow. After many years teaching in Dzierzoniow and Bielawa, he emigrated to the U.S. with his family. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey in Oklahoma and eventually retired as a researcher from the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n
Jurand was pre-deceased by his parents Jozef and Wladyslawa (Balys), beloved aunt Janina Balys, nephew Wojciech Janus, sister-in-law Myszka Janus, brother-in-law Andrzej Drzerski, many treasured aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his loyal dogs Ringo, Rex, and Bosio.<\/p>\n
Jurand is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Zaneta (Lancner), daughter Magdalena Janus of Framingham, Massachusetts, her husband David Mauricio and their children Zachary and Katy; and daughter Eva Buckley of Trumbull, Connecticut, her husband David and their children David, Michael, and Veronica. He is also survived by his brother Wieslaw of Tarnow, Poland, sister Halina of Wadowice, Poland, and their families.<\/p>\n
Jurand was a teacher with endless curiosity. He loved books, poetry, new technology, making videos for his family, and strumming a guitar. He was a witness to history, remembering German soldiers retreating, an American B-24 bomber shot down over his village, and tanks in the streets of Gdansk as martial law was imposed on the day he first tried to leave Poland in 1981. He travelled widely, from Moscow to Baku, from Stockholm to Rome, and all across America. Above all, he loved being a husband, father and grandfather.<\/p>\n
Until the end, Jurand returned in his mind to his “little homeland” in southern Poland, fondly remembering Zygodowice and his family home of Lazowka.<\/p>\n
Family and friends will honor and remember Jurand’s life by gathering for a time of visitation in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St. Framingham on Saturday morning, January 27th from 9-10:30am. A private burial will follow at Edgell Grove Cemetery.<\/p>\n
