George Mattingly passed away peacefully at home on February 15, 2026, just a few days before his ninety-first birthday. He lived a long life marked by deep faith, devotion to family, and service to others.
George was educated at the High School of Commerce in Boston and completed additional studies at Northeastern University and the Boston Conservatory. He also served in the U.S. Navy (Air Reserve); he received an Honorable Discharge in 1961.
In his younger years, George made his living in technology companies, including Digital Equipment Corporation, but his heart’s interests were singing and the performing arts. He performed in musical theater productions and, for ten seasons, in the chorus of the Opera Company of Boston during the Sarah Caldwell era.
A devoted Christian, George lived his life guided by a faith that he shared generously with those around him. He was especially passionate about prison ministry, volunteering for more than 30 years to improve the hearts and lives of inmates in Massachusetts Correctional Institutions with the hope offered by spiritual awakening. George was formally recognized for these efforts at a State House ceremony in 2005.
Throughout his life, George was physically active. Even in his later years, he could often be found at the gym. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, joining them for swimming, biking, baseball and tennis—activities that brought him great joy and reflected his love for family and fitness.
George is survived by his wife, Virginia Mattingly; together, they shared more than seventy years of love, faith, and companionship. He is also survived by his four children – all residents of Massachusetts: George Mattingly and his wife Maryellen; Joyce Saba and her husband Phil; Brenda Mattingly Campbell; and Beth Fujita and her husband Tomo; and by his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
George will be remembered for his unwavering faith, generous spirit, and commitment to serving others. There will be no formal memorial services, but George’s family welcomes thoughts, memories, and prayers, especially from those whose lives he touched.
