The American Red Cross of Massachusetts celebrated a milestone this week: one full year of lifesaving service at its blood and platelet donation center located at 150 Worcester Road in Framingham.
To mark the occasion, MetroWest Medical Center CEO Greg McFarland joined Framingham Mayor Charlie Sisitsky and Holly Grant, CEO of the Red Cross of Massachusetts, for a ceremony recognizing the community’s remarkable contributions.
Since opening in September 2024, the center has welcomed more than 3,000 blood donors. Even more noteworthy, 348 of the blood and platelet donors had never donated before.
“It’s been a really great year,” said Holly Grant, CEO of the Red Cross of Massachusetts.
“Every two seconds a hospital patient in the United States needs blood, and it’s Red Cross donors who answer that call. The Red Cross is proud to serve nearly every hospital and clinical center in Massachusetts… and we couldn’t do that without the support of this community.”
Greg McFarland, CEO of MetroWest Medical Center, emphasized the critical role blood donations play in local healthcare delivery.
“It takes about 100 gallons of blood a year to stay moving,” McFarland said.
“In 2024, over 100 gallons of blood were required to keep the OR operating, to keep the emergency room moving forward, and to provide transfusions for new mothers, all of those things. I’m really excited that this center is here, because it’s such an opportunity to give locally, knowing that that product will be utilized right down the road at the hospital.”
The Red Cross Blood Donation Center in Framingham remains a vital resource for the region, helping ensure that local hospitals have the blood supply they need to save lives every day.
