Bicycles, skateboards, playgrounds, trampolines and pools will likely play into your summer plans! But participating in warm-weather activities carries a risk of injury.
“While some health concerns can be taken care of with basic first aid, others require immediate medical care,” says Dr. Lisa Sotir, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Metrowest Medical Center. “If you or a loved one are facing a serious medical issue, our community emergency department is here and ready to provide the urgent care you need.”
Head injuries should always be taken seriously and a visit to the ER is recommended. Concussion symptoms often appear soon after injury but may take hours or days to emerge. Observable signs of a concussion include memory loss around the event, dazed appearance, confusion, clumsy movement, slow responses, brief loss of consciousness, or mood changes. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, vomiting, balance issues, sensitivity to light or noise, sluggishness, confusion, or feeling “off.”
Signs of a broken bone include a misshapen limb or joint, swelling, bruising, bleeding, and severe pain. Prevent injuries by easing into new activities, stretching and wearing proper gear like pads, helmets, and appropriate shoes.
Seek medical help if you suffer a severe burn from the sun, a hot liquid or an accident around the campfire. Blisters, severe pain and numbness are signs of a serious burn that requires medical attention.
And watch out for stings from flying insects. Most don’t require emergency care but go to the ER if you have a severe reaction or are allergic to bees or wasps. Signs include hives, itching, pale skin, difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe limb swelling, swelling of the throat or tongue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of consciousness, or a rapid heartbeat.
