The winter weather is in full swing, and MassBay’s Automotive Technology Division is pleased to provide some essential tips to keep you and your vehicle prepared for the harsh winter conditions. Stay safe on the road this winter with these seasonal tips.

• Start and Warm Up Your Vehicle
o Begin by starting and warming up your vehicle. Allowing the engine to warm gives the oil time to lubricate the engine and transmissions components, helping prolong the vehicle’s lifespan.

• Check Tire Tread and Pressure
o Verify your tires have adequate tread for winter conditions.
o Regularly check tire pressure, as it tends to drop in cold weather.
o Confirm your spare tire is properly inflated.

• Inspect Your Battery
o Cold weather can impact battery efficiency; make sure it’s fully charged and in good condition.
o Clean corrosion from terminals and have the battery tested if unsure of its strength.

• Check Fluid Levels
o Use winter-grade windshield wiper fluid to prevent freezing.
o Check the antifreeze and coolant levels.
o Monitor all vehicle fluids, including brake and transmission fluids.

• Test Your Brakes
o Ensure your brake system is fully functional, as stopping distances can increase in icy conditions.
o Familiarize yourself with how your braking system, including ABS, performs on slippery surfaces.

• Ensure Proper Functioning of Lights
o Confirm all lights are operational, including headlights, brake lights, fog lights, and turn signals.
o Consider upgrading to brighter bulbs if visibility is poor.

• Replace Worn Wipers, Replace with Winter Blades, Check the Wiper System
o Replace worn wiper blades and inspect the wiper motor for proper function.
o Install winter-specific wipers to prevent ice buildup and ensure better contact with the windshield.

• Check the Exhaust System
o A well-maintained exhaust system prevents carbon monoxide buildup.
o Avoid running the vehicle for long periods with windows closed, especially when stationary.

• Pack an Emergency Kit
o Include a blanket, gloves, flashlight, water, non-perishable snacks, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, ice scraper, and traction aids like sand or kitty litter.
o Roadside reflectors or flares can enhance visibility in case of a breakdown.

• Check Your Heater and Defroster
o Verify your heater and defrosting systems are working properly.

• Prepare for Salt and Snow Buildup
o Regularly wash your vehicle, including the undercarriage, to prevent salt-related rust.

• Review Emergency Contacts and Insurance
o Keep current roadside assistance contacts and ensure your insurance covers winter-related incidents.
o Inform family or friends of your route when traveling in hazardous conditions.

• Maintain Fuel and Battery Levels for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles
o Keep your gas tank close to full to avoid moisture buildup.
o Keep hybrid and electric vehicle batteries fully charged, as cold temperatures can drain them quickly.

By following these winter driving tips, you can help ensure your safety and the reliability of your vehicle throughout the season. Stay alert, drive cautiously, and prepare for winter conditions ahead of time.
