John D. Gillis, 76, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 20, 2024. Born in Woburn, he was the son of the late Suzanne (Giroux) and John Gillis. He was the beloved husband of 50 years to the late Sara (Wood) Gillis.
John was a graduate of Arlington Catholic High School and Northeastern University. A lifelong Red Sox Fan and season ticket holder, he found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, whether it was going to the movies, dining out, or enjoying the White Mountains; where he looked forward to the annual rubber duck races. John was a man of many interests, including a love for travel and collecting various things, such as coins, stamps, and books. He loved being involved with baseball and spent much of his free time coaching and advising the Framingham youth baseball leagues. He was also a passionate trivia enthusiast and history buff and took great pride in his flower and vegetable gardens. Above all, John’s greatest joy came from the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather whose memory will be cherished, and his impact on those he loved will never be forgotten.
John is survived by three children, Michael Gillis and his partner, Pam Goldman of Hopedale, Alison MacNeil of Hopedale, and Kevin Gillis of Framingham. He also leaves behind his siblings, Roland Gillis of NC, Mark Gillis of WA, Mary “Mimi” Randall of ID, and Jacqueline Gillis of Hudson, MA, as well as his three grandchildren, Carolina, Ryan, and Addison. He is predeceased by his brother, Francis Gillis, and his son-in-law, John Paul MacNeil.
