MetroWest YMCA Offers Free Programs to Manage and Prevent Chronic Conditions

Free Diabetes Prevention Program Starts During National Diabetes Awareness Month

Framingham, MA — In November, for National Diabetes Awareness Month, the MetroWest YMCA is spotlighting its free Diabetes Prevention Program to empower community members at risk of type 2 diabetes. This program, part of the Y’s health and wellness initiatives, provides no-cost, evidence-based support for those managing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and Parkinson’s disease.

“Diabetes affects over a third of U.S. adults, making preventive health education essential,” said Jesse Potter, Director of Evidence-Based and Older Adult Programs at MetroWest YMCA. “Our Diabetes Prevention Program offers a transformative resource to our community.”

Program Highlights: Diabetes Prevention Program

Starting November 13, this year-long program is open to adults 18+ with prediabetes symptoms. Sessions are held Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. at the Framingham Branch, focusing on:

  • Healthy eating and diabetes-specific meal planning
  • Exercise routines suited to individual lifestyles
  • Weight management techniques
  • Understanding diabetes’ overall health impact

This supportive environment allows participants to share experiences and motivate each other. With funding from Springwell, the MA Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and the Federal Administration for Community Living, the program is free and includes a complimentary 3-month YMCA membership.

According to the Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs, over 33,400 Massachusetts adults are diagnosed with diabetes annually. Programs like these play a crucial role in reversing this trend.

Program Start Date: November 13, 6-7 PM
