Luis Gonçalves had a fantastic sense of humor and natural knack for joke telling, appropriate or otherwise. He loved life and the people in it. He also had a deep commitment to his family, an unmatched work ethic and as an immigrant to the United States, he worked hard each and every day to provide for his family as they embarked on a life he had only dreamt about.

Luis Vitorino Gonçalves was born January 10, 1954 in Paradela de Monforte, Chaves, Portugal one of eight children to Ana de Assunçao Vitorino and the late José Antonio. Raised and educated in Portugal he also served in the Portuguese military. Luis immigrated to the United States in 1977 with his new bride, Isabel E. Santo whom he married on July 23rd, 1977 in Paradela de Monforte, Portugal.

In addition to his wife of 47 years, Isabel, he is survived by his children, Maria A. Gonçalves and her fiancé Ryan Rastani of Hopkinton and José E. Gonçalves and his wife Dina (Carvalho) Gonçalves of Framingham; his grandchildren, Blake and Luke Patterson and Natasha and Aria Gonçalves; his mother, Ana de Assunçao Vitorino of Portugal; his siblings, Flavia Cruz and her husband Augusto, Alice Valente and her husband Almor, Conceição Gonçalves and her husband João Carriço all of Portugal, António Gonçalves and his wife Albertina of Ashland, Ana Maria Carvalho and her husband Alberto of Milford, Olga Gonçalves of Portugal and Eduarda Cadime and her husband Alexandrino of Ashland and many nieces & nephews and their families.

Luis began working at General Motors in Framingham and later for International Paper for over 20 years. Lastly, he worked in custodial services at Framingham State University before retiring in April of 2020.

He was a devout parishioner of Saint Tarcisius Parish and an active member of the Portuguese Club in Framingham. He and Isabel loved to dance and were always the first on the dance floor. Later in life, his pride and joy was becoming a Vovô (grandfather) to his four grandchildren. He loved travel and trips back to his much-loved native Portugal to visit with his large immediate and extended family and friends. He also loved the game of soccer and faithfully followed his favorite teams.

Luis died at home with his family at his side on August 5, 2024 after a five-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He was 70.

Family and friends will honor and remember Luis’ life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St. Framingham on Friday, August 9th from 4 – 8 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Tarcisius Church, 562 Waverly Avenue, Framingham on Saturday morning at 10 o’clock. Burial will follow in Saint Tarcisius Cemetery, Framingham.
