Dr. Joan Charlma (Jay) Jones, age 94, of Framingham, MA, passed away on July 9, 2023.
Joan was born on June 29, 1929 to Austin Elwood and Helen (Sandall) Jay in Ulysses, KS. She graduated from Grant City High School in Grant City, MO in 1947. That same year she was united in marriage to Teddy Carr Jones for 58 years until his passing in 2006.
She dedicated her life to teaching. She received her BS in Education at Northwest Missouri State College in 1952 and her Masters in Education at the University of Missouri in 1954. She started her career teaching in a one-room country school house in Missouri. She went on to get her Doctor of Education at Boston University in 1970. She was a professor in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College where she taught for 35 years.
Joan is survived by her son, Sterling Jones; granddaughters, Ainsley McCowan and husband Scott McCowan and Kelsey Byrne and husband Mark Byrne; great grandchildren, Audrey and Theodore McCowan; sisters, Jean Verdin and Kathryn Olney; sister-in-law, Betty Jay; brother, Donald Jay; several nieces and nephews; and loving friends and neighbors.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Austin and Helen Jay; her husband, Teddy Jones; her sisters, Loreen Hughes and Marilyn Ruckman; and her brother, Dr. Austin Jay.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joan’s life by gathering for her funeral services in the Chapel at Edgell Grove Cemetery, 53 Grove St. Framingham on Monday morning, July 24, 2023, at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow.
