WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. (July 3, 2023) – Six talented student interns for MassBay Community College’s Communication Department have successfully launched The BayWatch, a captivating student-run podcast in partnership with Newton’s cable access channel, NewTV. The inaugural episode, which runs just under 30 minutes long, was created, written, produced, and edited by the student interns with the invaluable support of NewTV. The first episode shines a spotlight on student life at MassBay, providing an authentic glimpse into the college experience through the stories and experiences of its students.

“MassBay is grateful to NewTV for their partnership on this exciting project,” said Associate Professor and Chair of the MassBay Communication Department Carolyn Crotty Guttilla. “Because it is student-run, the BayWatch podcast authentically conveys the experience of community college students. And, thanks to the expertise and state-of-the art equipment of NewTV, the podcast is professional-grade in terms of production and audio quality. We are very proud of it.”

This innovative podcast, under the guidance of Professor Guttilla, was created by students for students, and is the first-ever MassBay produced podcast. The student interns who created this project were; Sabrina Flood of Framingham, MA, Ronan Keane of Needham, MA, Benjamin Kisija Hopkinton, MA, Daniel Mizahi of Newton, MA, Juliana Pineda Lopez of Brighton, MA, and Colin Purdy of Dedham, MA.

“This team of students have worked very hard on The BayWatch, and we are thrilled it has launched,” said Communication student intern Juliana Pineda Lopez. “Knowing that Professor Guttilla intends to continue the podcast with future student interns assures us that our effort was just the beginning. We feel like with The BayWatch, we have left a legacy at MassBay and a high-quality podcast for future listeners to enjoy.”

MassBay Community College continues to provide valuable opportunities for students to engage in meaningful initiatives that encourage creativity, collaboration, and the exploration of diverse perspectives. The BayWatch podcast demonstrates MassBay’s commitment to supporting student-driven projects and initiatives that enhance the overall academic experience.
