Fed Up With Daily Devastation From Gun Violence, Gun Safety Advocates Send Message to Lawmakers on Mother’s Day to Call for Continued Federal Action

FRAMINGHAM, MA – On Saturday, May 13, volunteers with MA Moms Demand Action, part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots network, will host a Mother’s Day event to call on Congress to reinstate the bipartisan assault weapons ban. The MA event will include forming a human chain around Hemenway Elementary School – a statement of protecting kids over guns.

2023 is on pace to be the deadliest year on record for mass shootings in America. From Monterey Park to Nashville to Louisville, there have been more than 170 mass shootings so far. This Mother’s Day also marks one year since a white supremacist took the lives of 10 people and wounded three people in a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and May 24 will mark one year since 19 children and two teachers were killed in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. Both shooters, armed with hate and a firearm, used an AR-15 to commit these heinous tragedies.

This Mother’s Day weekend, and in reflection of Bereaved Mother’s Day on May 1, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers will be organizing hundreds of events across the country to put pressure on federal lawmakers to get assault weapons off of our streets and out of our communities.

WHAT:

A community event calling for federal action on assault weapons and elevating the voices of those demanding an end to this crisis. The MA event will include families, teachers, students and more.

SPEAKERS:
  • Samantha McGarry, Massachusetts chapter of Moms Demand Action
  • Tessa McGarry, Students Demand Action
  • Ilyse Levine Kanji, gun violence survivor
  • and more to be announced
