ASHLAND – Igidio “Izzy” Assencoa, age 84 of Ashland, died peacefully Tuesday March 28, surrounded by family at UMass Medical Center.

He was the beloved husband of Maureen (Paksarian) Assencoa. 

Born in Framingham, he was the son of Harriet (Cobb) Assencoa and Igidio Assencoa. 

Following graduation from Framingham High School in 1957, he served in the United States Air Force. 

Izzy was a proud member of the Framingham Fire Department, serving the City of Framingham for over 20 years. 

A longtime resident of Ashland, Izzy received recognition as Ashland Citizen of the Year and Hometown Hero from Boston 25, both in 2013.

He was a member of the Ashland Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and Friends of the Ashland Council on Aging, among many other volunteer efforts. For many years Izzy enjoyed card playing with his friends, but especially with his grandsons Jake, Alex, and Derek. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Wayne and Todd of Ashland, Mark and wife Robin of Marlboro, Igidio Jr and fiancée Ada of California, and daughters Renita and Dionne.  He leaves his sisters Theodora Dyer of Framingham, Darlene Assencoa Mazurek and husband Roman of Ashland, brother Charles of North Carolina, and Walter of Whitinsville along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sister Mary Jackson and brother Joseph Assencoa.

His larger than life personality always brightened everyone’s day and he will truly be missed.  We say farewell to a “true gentleman”, Igidio “Izzy” Assencoa, a kind compassionate man and a friend to all. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Sunday April 2, 2023, from 2-6 p.m. at the Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech Street (corner of Union Ave.) Framingham.

His funeral service will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023, at 10 a.m. at the Cushing Memorial Chapel, 60 Dudley Road, Framingham.

Burial will follow at Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland.
