BOSTON – Massachusetts Governor Maura T. Healey has ordered that the United States of America flag and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag at all state buildings should remain at half-staff until sunset March 3, 2023 in honor of the life and legacy of former United States Congressman, John Walter Olver, who passed away on February 23, 2023.

“Congressman John Olver dedicated his life to serving the people of Western and Central Massachusetts and always stayed true to his values. He was a strong advocate for affordable health care, abortion access, public transportation and rural communities. I will always be grateful for his kindness and his friendship. He will be dearly missed, and my heart goes out to his loved ones,’ said Gov. Healey.

Olver was the U.S. representative for Massachusetts’s 1st congressional district from 1991 to 2013. he retired after his 11th term.

Olver taught chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for eight years and later resigned to pursue a career in politics. He served two terms as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from January 1, 1969, to January 3, 1973. He later served for nine terms in the Massachusetts Senate from January 3, 1973, until his resignation in 1991 to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
