ASHLAND – Henry James Garland, 89 of Stow, former longtime resident of Ashland, passed away Friday February, 24, 2023 at his home. 

Born in Marlborough, he was the son of the late Harold and Ethel (MacNeil) Garland.  He was the husband of Susan (Stanhope) Garland for 54 years. 

A graduate of Ashland High School 1951, Henry joined the Navy serving his country honorably in the Korea War from 1951-55. 

Henry was employed in several jobs; his favorites were being the shipper at Massachusetts Broken Stone in Weston and as an administrative assistant. For the U.S. Geological Survey, Hydrology division.

After retirement, Henry enjoyed 16 wonderful years in Florida.  He was an avid baseball fan, and enjoyed running/walking, ballroom dancing, shuffleboard and music

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeff Garland and his wife Kathleen of Oakham, and John Garland and his wife Wendy of Norfolk, three grandchildren, Nicholas, Nora, and Nathan, one brother, Edward Garland of Framingham, many nieces and nephews, and was the brother of the late Helen Olzsak of Texas.

A funeral service will be held Thursday March 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street in Ashland, with burial to follow in Wildwood Cemetery of Ashland.  One visiting hour will be held Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the service at the funeral home.
