FRAMINGHAM – John W. Coville, Jr., 94, of Marshfield died January 17, 2023 at South Shore Hospital.

He was born in Belmont and raised in Waltham to J. Wilder Coville and Marion (Whitmore) Coville. He leaves his wife of 71 years, Barbara (Varney), along with his son Stephen (and daughter-in-law Gisele) of Duxbury, son Gary (and partner Theresa) of Centerville, daughters Donna and Deborah both of Marshfield, ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

John was a graduate of Waltham High School, a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran, diesel mechanic, and a retired Lieutenant on the Framingham Fire Department. Upon retiring, John moved to Marshfield in 1987 and started lobster fishing which he did until age 81.

He was an extraordinary mechanic and could fix about anything. He built model tugboats from his own design (see Youtube “Johns working model tugboat”), maintained wooden boats, and was always willing to assist other fishermen with their mechanical problems.

John was a life-long Bruins fan and played recreational hockey into his 50’s.

He was a member of Daniel Webster Lodge A.F.& A.M. and the Marshfield Yacht Club.

At his request, funeral services are private.
