FRAMINGHAM – Need a lift to school? The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority has a bus for you.

Last Fall, the MWRTA stepped up to help get some high school students to school, who didn’t have a school bus.

Now, the MWRTA and the Framingham Public School district have announced a formal partnership to help middle and high school students to get to school on time.

The MWRTA is holding an informational session on how the regional bus system works for students and their parents on Thursday February 2, at 5:30 p.m. held at 2 Franklin Street in Framingham.

If you wish to join virtually, click here to join on Zoom.

This program will include:

  • Identified diversion routes that will pick students up from designated locations closest to their homes and transport them to school.
  • Fixed pick-up and drop-off times and locations.
  • Overview of the MWRTA Catch App which includes the GPS functions that allows families to track the bus
  • Review of the bus schedules and routes including different bus stops.
  • Safety policy reminder for riders

When the school year started in September, the Framingham Public School District announced it was short 17 bus drivers from its contracted 77 routes.

Now at the end of January, and the district’s bus driver provider NRT Bus Inc. is still short 17 drivers for 77 routes, and some routes have even less drivers due to sickness and other issues.

In October, MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (MWRTA) Manager of Community Relations Jon Fetherston met with with a Framingham High social worker and 8 Framingham High students and explained to them about the MWRTA’s fixed bus route system. Some of those students who had no other way to school began using the regional transit buses.

Last week, Fetherston met with the principals at Cameron Middle and Walsh Middle schools. This week, he is meeting with Fuller Middle principal and the acting principal at Framingham High.

And yesterday, the Framingham Public Schools has formally announced a partnership and is sending out information about Thursday’s session in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. (the later two versions are below.)
