FRAMINGHAM – Winnifred (Legere) Staples, of Holliston, passed away on September 11, 2022, at the age of 96.

She was born in Portage Lake Maine, the only child of Philip and Yvonne Legere.

Winnie was the loving mother of Cynthia (David) Cedrone and Nancy Staples, grandmother (Gram) of Lisa (Owen) Babineau, Kerry (Eric) Boyd and Kym (Scott) Wells and great grandmother (Great Gram) of Kara (Jeff) Haffemann, Owen and Erin Babineau, and Madison and Kristin Wells.  She is also survived by her dear sisters-in-law Janet Staples and Jacqueline Shagory.

Winnie moved to Massachusetts in her early twenties where she attended secretarial school, raised her daughters, and worked for 28 years as an administrative assistant at Kathleen Daniels Nursing Home in Framingham where she was recognized as employee of the year for her dedication to the clients they served.

Even during her retirement, Winnie continued to work part time at her granddaughter’s CPA firm. She set an example of tenacity when facing life’s challenges and demonstrating a strong work ethic – important principles for all members of her family to follow.

She has been an active member of the First Baptist Church in Holliston and volunteered at the Holliston Food Pantry and the Holliston Senior Center.  She further contributed to her community by donating hand-knitted items to those in need and serving dinners at a homeless shelter.  She enjoyed gardening, was an avid cribbage player, and routinely did crossword puzzles (in later years on her iPad). Mostly, Winnie loved spending time with her family, any day, but especially eating lobster rolls on the front porch of the family home in York Harbor, Maine, or on holidays when she would always bring her special tin of “Gram’s cookies”.

She was the gentle matriarch of the family and a friend to people of all ages and backgrounds, sharing her quick wit and a dry sense of humor even through her final days.  She will be sorely missed but will be remembered fondly in all our hearts.

Please join us for a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 23, 2022, 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 40 High Street, Holliston.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Norton Funeral Home in Framingham.

Donations in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, c/o Treasurer, 40 High Street, Holliston, MA 01746
