FRAMINGHAM – Greta H. Cofield passed away at her home in Framingham, Massachusetts on Monday December 20, 2021, at the age of 84.

Greta was born on January 6, 1937, in Memphis Tennessee to the late Nelson and Alice (Johnson) Hughes.

After the family moved from Memphis, Greta was raised in Boston and graduated from Girls High School in 1954.  She attended Suffolk University for two years then entered the workforce.  She went to Boston State College at night and graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in science and management.

On Sept 1, 1956, she married the love of her life, Gerald L A Cofield Sr and the two were married for 32 years until Gerald passed away on December 20th, 1988, 33 years to the day as Greta.

Greta and Gerald bought their first home in Holliston, Massachusetts in 1969 then moved to their current home in Framingham in 1983 soon after becoming Postmaster of Framingham on September 4, 1982. 

Greta started with the post office as a clerk in the late 1950’s at the Back Bay post office and worked her way up to Postmaster of Framingham. 

She received many awards and accolades during her time as Postmaster including Postmaster of the Year in 1994. 

She retired after serving 42 years at the post office where 19 of those years was as the Postmaster of Framingham.

After retiring Greta moved to Maricopa Arizona where she was very active in the community and involved in many clubs and activities. Greta especially loved caring for her gardens at her home in Arizona. 

Greta was active in her church, on civic committees and volunteered for the less fortunate. She was also a member of the sorority Delta Sigma Theta.  She loved to travel and traveled the world with her close friends.

She is survived by her three sons Gerald L A Cofield Jr of Natick, Todd G Cofield of Spencer and Gordon O Cofield his wife Sherry and her son David Nowlan Jr of Framingham, two grandsons, four great grandchildren, brother Rupert Hughes and his wife Rosetta, sister in laws Amie Owens and Dorothy Cofield, several half siblings, many cousins, nieces, nephews and many close friends.  Greta was the matriarch of her family and was loved by all.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend her graveside service at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022 at Edgell Grove Cemetery, 53 Grove Street in Framingham. 

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Norton Funeral Home, Framingham.
