FRAMINGHAM – The fourth seed Framingham State University softball team took the victory as the Rams defeated fifth seed Fitchburg State 5-3 in an opening round game of the 2022 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Tournament Tuesday afternoon on Maple Street Field.

With the loss, the Fitchburg Falcons drop to 17-21 overall.

With the win, the Framingham State Rams are now 19-16 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • After a scoreless first inning, both teams tallied single runs in the second.
  • The Rams got one in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout from Kelsey McGuill advancing Brooke Grassia home for the solo run, taking the 2-1 lead.
  • Fitchburg tied the game in the top of the fifth inning at 2-2.
  • A three run fifth inning pushed the Rams’ lead 5-2. Shelby Roode delivered an RBI triple to left plating Gwen Carpenter, followed by a fielding error that drove both Hannah Pelletier and Skylar Rheaume in for the runs.
  • Fitchburg State would get one in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to shortstop from Sarah Cahill to bring the score to 5-3. However, Ally Moran shut down the Falcons in the top of the seventh to secure the win for the Rams.
  • Ally Moran earned the victory for the Rams going seven innings and allowing three earned runs on just nine hits with four strikeouts.
  • Sarah Cahill took the loss for the Falcons going six innings allowing five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

UP NEXT: With the win, the Rams advance to face top seed Bridgewater State in Bridgewater on Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
