UPDATED: Framingham Firefighters Extinguish 2-Alarm Blaze at Route 9 Apartments

FRAMINGHAM – Firefighters were on the scene of a 2-alarm fire at the former Halstead Apartments on Route 9 Sunday morning for more than 4 hours.

Six people were displaced by the fire.

A second alarm was called very early by the deputy fire chief for the 11:30 a.m. fire at 1610 Worcester Road in Framingham.

“The entire Framingham Fire Department” responded to the scene when the second alarm was called, said Framingham Assistant Fire Chief John Schultz.

As it was a Sunday morning fire, “there were a lot of occupants” in the high-rise apartment building, said Chief Schultz.

Engine 1 and Tower 1 crews were first on the scene, and did a great job locating the fire and containing it the second floor apartment, said Chief Schultz.

“Remainder of the crews worked on search and rescue and evacuating occupants from the building,” said Assistant Chief Schultz.

That second floor apartment had extensive smoke damage and water damage. The apartment below had water damage too, said the chief.

There was a “minor injury” to one firefighters, said Chief Schultz.

The American Red Cross is on scene and assistant occupants of the apartment building that need assistance, said Chief Schultz, just after 3:30 p.m.

Chief Schultz said crews were still cleaning up on scene at 3:30 p.m.

Framingham Fire Chief Michael Dutcher said Monday, May 2 the cause of the fire was ‘accidental in nature.”

The cause was the “heating of cooking oil above its ignition temperature,” said Chief Dutcher.

Estimate cost damage was not available at this time.

There were road closures at Route 9 and Country Club Lane and at Gates Road. There was also a road closure near Parker Road due to the fire.
