MARLBOROUGH – Robert K. “Gus” Gustafson, Sr. 75, of Marlborough died Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Marlborough Hospital as a result of complications from a stroke. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family and listening to Neil Diamond.

He was the husband of Anne E. (Trudeau) Gustafson for the past 55 years. Gus was born in Boston, the son of the late John R. and Ethel C. (Cross) Gustafson and was raised in Marlborough.

He was a 1965 graduate of Marlborough High School and went on to receive an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering at Wentworth Institute in Boston, where he later taught Land Surveying and Civil Engineering as well.

He was a Land Surveyor by trade and worked for Coburn Engineering in Hudson for many years.  He eventually went on to start his own company, American Site Corp in Concord.

Gus was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, photography, cycling and riding his motorcycle. He instilled a love for the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. Gus was also an accomplished “storyteller” whose yarns and misadventures will live on for generations.  Above all, Gus was the man you wanted in your corner.  He fiercely protected those he loved and those who needed a helping hand.  If a life well-lived is measured by the number of friends one has, or by the random acts of kindness one does, then Gus had a wonderfully full life.

Besides his wife Anne, he leaves a son, Robert K. Gustafson, Jr. and his wife Karen of Marlborough, a daughter Wendy A. Patriacca of Smithville, Tennessee, and another son, Matthew J. “Boomer” Gustafson and his wife Megan of Ayer; a brother Jon R. Gustafson and his wife Catherine of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania; Clifford Deckert, who Gus regarded as a son, and his wife Jeanne of Hudson; five grandchildren, Daniel, Sarah, Cian, Marin and Max; many nephews and nieces, cousins and friends.

Calling hours will be held Friday, April 8 from 4-7 p.m.M in the Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mass Audubon at www.masssaudubon.org.

All are invited to sign Gus’ online guestbook at www.collinsfuneral.com.
