FRAMINGHAM – Irene (Chaves) Calvao, 95, a lifelong resident of Framingham died on March 9, 2022 after a lengthy illness.

She was the daughter of Portuguese immigrants, Joseph & Maria (Gomes) Chaves, and the beloved wife of the late Armando Calvao.

Irene was a graduate of Framingham High School, and received all of her sacraments from St. Stephen Church.

She worked at the Dennison Manufacturing Company for a time before staying home to raise her 3 children.

Her love of reading served her well when she went back to work and became the Librarian at the Framingham Public Library, retiring after more than 20 years.

Irene enjoyed sports, particular those local to Framingham. She could often be found at the football and baseball fields, and at one point in time she and Armando had season tickets and front row seats to the Patriots. She loved everything about nature and found beauty in all of it. Her Catholic faith guided her.

Irene is survived by her children, Nancy Stevens, Patricia Frasca & her husband Patrick, and Manny Calvao & his wife Brenda all of Blackstone, her grandchildren, Richie Kent & his wife Chrissy, Tracey McCarthy & her husband Chris, Leigh Frasca & his fiancé Julie, Christopher Frasca & his wife Ashley, Derek Frasca & his fiancé Kyriana, Jaime Calvao, and Jillian Wu & her husband Bing, her great grandchildren, Samantha & her fiancé Mike, Trevor, Nicole, Zachary, Cameron, Peirce, and Ava, her great great grandson Noah, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her beloved husband Armando, Irene was predeceased by her siblings, Armindo Chaves, Arthur Chaves, and Anna Gordon.

Family and friends will honor and remember Irene’s life by gathering for a time of visitation in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St. Framingham on Tuesday, March 15 from 9-10:30 a.m.

Her Funeral Mass will follow in St. Stephen Church, 221 Concord St. Framingham at 11 o’clock.

Interment in Edgell Grove Cemetery.
