HUDSON – John Louis Cummings, 88, of Hudson and formerly long time resident of Wellesley, died on Saturday, January, 29, 2022 at the Artisan in Hudson after a long battle with Lewy body dementia.

John was born on April 27, 1933 in El Paso County, Colorado, the son of John and Jennie (Lolcama) Cummings.

He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, working as an engineer on the B36 bomber from 1954-1957.

He then attended and received a degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963.

He worked as an architect at Carl Koch in Boston and later was a partner at The Architects Collaborative in Cambridge prior to opening his own practice before retiring.

He completed projects around the world including a luxury hotel in Cyprus, a post office in Kuwait and the King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia.  His work can be seen all over the world, from large projects to small.  His designs can also be seen in numerous home additions around Boston.

He loved travel, sports and music.  He was an avid ten-pin bowler into his 80’s.  He enjoyed needlepoint art and many of his works are hanging in his home.  He always had time for his family and enjoyed frequent family get-togethers.  He will be missed dearly.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley (Bickelhaupt) Cummings of Hudson, MA; his children, John and his wife, Lisa Cummings of Ashland, MA and Chris and his wife, Colleen Cummings of Medway, MA; and his grandchildren, Ryan and Haley Cummings.

He will be cremated and a private burial held at a family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellesley.

Arrangements by Matarese Funeral Home in Ashland.
