FRAMINGHAM – Framingham High junior Madi Jones skied out of the fog to place 28th and score 21 points for the Flyers alpine ski team.

In the Flyers’ second varsity race of the season Jones and senior Calvin Poole earned points in the Slalom race at the Blue Hills Ski Area.

It was a drizzly and foggy night of racing. Framingham was in the first seed which was probably an advantage because the snow conditions were soft and deteriorated as the race continued. Due to the fog the reflectors at the finish line were affecting the timing pulse which caused multiple reruns so they canceled the second run.

“It has been a challenging season for the ski team with a lack of snow and the COVID delay so our season has been real short said coach Roni Sue Bower, who is in her 9th season with the Flyers.

With a handful of practices and one junior varsity race and only 2 varsity races Coach Bower said, “our small team of 11 has been doing an amazing job. None of the current members of the team have raced before joining the high school ski team and they are finding success and it is very exciting.”

The first varsity race the slalom course was icy and treacherous, said Bower.

Framingham had several racers scoring points or just missing out by less than a tenth of a second
from scoring.

All 12 Mass Bay Ski League Teams race each week at the same time.

There are 90-100 Boys and 90-100 girls racing each time. Finishing in the top 44 earns points for you as an individual as well as a team.

Senior Poole finished 29th with a time of 38.29 and earning 20 points and in his second run of the night he finished 39th scoring 10 points.

Senior Qwynn Kobertz finished 38th and earning 11points and then finishing 43rd with 6 points.

Jones earned her self 2 points.

Freshman Maddie Rieder was 2 seconds out from scoring and then closed that gap by just missing out by 1 second.

Senior Leland Bastow earned himself 1 point but crashed his second run.

Jordan Book was 2 seconds out and then less than a tenth of a second from scoring in the second run.

The second varsity race held in the fog brought success to Madi Jones finishing 28th with a time of 39.9 seconds and Calvin Poole finishing 43rd with a time of 39.28 seconds.

Leland and Jordan just fell short of scoring, said the coach.

Freshmen Brayden Piazza and Sam Grossman competed in their first varsity race happy to finish the course, said the coach.

Junior Laila McIndoo and senior Myra Grossman also competed for the Flyers and are moving up in the
standards.

Next up for the Flyers is a varsity race at Ski Ward Tuesday, Feb 8 and a varsity race at Blue
Hills on Feb. 10. The season ends with a final race at Blue Hills on valentine’s night.
