WESTFIELD – The Framingham State University women’s basketball team defeated host Westfield State Wednesday evening by a score of 77-72 to improve to 8-0 in MASCAC play this season.

Framingham State is now 16-3 overall.

Westfield State Owls drop to 11-10 overall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Framingham State senior Camille Desrochers scored a career-best 18 points on 6-of-11 from long range, 12 of which points came in the decisive second quarter to help pace the Rams offense.
  • Reigning USBWA National Player of the Week Flannery O’Connor added another double-double to her stat line scoring 18 points on 9-of-16 from the floor with ten rebounds.
  • Sophmore Katty Haidul picked up a game best 18 rebounds with 15 points and classmate Gwendolyn Carpenter added 16 points going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe and dishing out nine assists.
  • Melissa Gray led all scorers with 25 points for the Owls with 12 rebounds while Jordan Grant added 15 points and Olivia Hadla added 13 for the hosts.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a back-and-forth first quarter a Gray layup for the Owls gave them a seven-point lead a couple minutes into the second quarter. The Rams called timeout to regroup and rattled off a 12-to-2 run featuring six points by Desrochers to take the lead.
  • The Owls clawed back retaking the lead in the final minute of the half but a triple by Carpenter and another trey by Desrochers at the buzzer sent the Rams to the locker room up 40-36; a lead they would never relinquish.
  • The Rams would push their lead to as much as 11 launching a 12-3 run spanning over six minutes capped by an O’Connor basket in the final minute of the third.
  • The Owls again would fight back cutting the Rams lead to three points twice around the midway point of the 4th quarter, but that Rams would answer on both occasions. In the final minute Hadla converted a three-point play to cut the Owls deficit to four points (69-65) but Carpenter would go a perfect 8-for-8 from the line in the final 30 seconds to seal the win for the Rams.

UP NEXT: The Rams return to the court on Saturday when they host Fitchburg State in MASCAC action at noon
