FRAMINGHAM – Julia Ann (Freed) MacPherson, 83, of Framingham, passed away Friday, November 5, 2021, at Casa de Ramana Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness.

Known as Judy or “Miss Judy,” Julia was born August 29, 1938 in Massolion, Ohio, the daughter of Lester V. and Evedine (McCullough) Freed.

She and her sister Nancy lost their parents at a young age. Nancy remained in Ohio, and Charles and Helen (Freed) Hoar, Judy’s aunt and uncle, brought Judy back to Lewistown, PA. Judy was raised as sister to Charles Jr, Calvin and Shirley. She is survived by Charles and Jane Hoar of Lewistown, PA, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were Calvin M. Hoar, Shirley (Hoar) Johnson, and Nancy (Freed) Garthwaite.

Judy graduated from the Chief Logan High School in Yeagertown, PA, with the class of 1956.

The Hoar family were active members of the local Salvation Army Church, where Judy completed a six-year Corps Cadet program. She was also active in the Torchbearers youth group. Judy went on to attend the Salvation Army Training College in Bronx, New York in 1957, served her probationary year in 1958 in Lock Haven, PA, and was commissioned as a Salvation Army Lieutenant in June, 1959. Judy served as the Assistant Corps Officer in Framingham from 1960 to 1964, attaining the rank of Captain. Judy was married to John I. MacPherson of Bridgewater, Maine, from 1964 to 1967.

From 1969-1984, Judy was employed as a Directory Assistance Operator with the former New England Telephone and Telegraph in Framingham, retiring when the office moved to Boston. She went on to become the Director of Volunteers and Food Coordinator at the Framingham Salvation Army. Judy retired from that position in July, 2007.

For more than ten years in the 1990’s she visited shut-ins for the program then called the League of Mercy of the Salvation Army.

In retirement, Judy served as an active volunteer for the Miracle Kitchen at the Framingham Salvation Army until the program closed at the end of 2018.

She also enjoyed bell ringing at various retail locations each Christmas season. Miss Judy remained an active Soldier in the Framingham Salvation Army Church until her death.

Judy enjoyed cross-stitching, reading, and cross-word puzzles. She loved cats and people, taking long walks and participating in Women’s Ministries and other activities at the Framingham Corps.

A memorial service will be held at the Salvation Army, 350 Union Avenue in Framingham on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 11 am.

The service will be live streamed on the Framingham Corps’ Facebook page.
