FRAMINGHAM – A classroom of students at a Framingham elementary school will be closing due to COVID-19 cases, announced the public school district today.

The classroom at McCarthy Elementary School has had two positive coronavirus cases.

The students in the classroom have been participating in a program called “test and stay,” which allows students to be tested and if not positive they can stay in school.

The school district said tonight that all of the students in that classroom have become “symptomatic.” That means the students are not eligible for the “test and stay” program.

The decision to “temporarily close” the classroom was made to “to prevent spread of illness.”

This decision was made in collaboration with the District COVID team, McCarthy administration, and the school nurse, said McCarthy Principal Cynthia Page.

“Students will be out of school for a total of 6 school days.”

The students will return to class on Monday, Nov. 22 “provided that they have no COVID-like symptoms of any COVID-like illness and are feeling well,” said the Principal in an email to families.

Thanksgiving break begins on Wednesday, Nov, 24.

The public school district said the Principal and the classroom teacher will work with the students in regards to academics.

Risk Mitigation Efforts

While it is impossible to eliminate all risk of contracting COVID-19, the Principal suggested families can take several steps to lower the risk of transmitting COVID-19 including:

  • Keep Children Home When Sick
  • Wear Masks Consistently and Correctly
  • Wash Hands Frequently
  • Maintain Physical Distance When Possible
  • Participate in Routine COVID Testing and/or Test and Stay
  • Increase Ventilation and Air Circulation
  • Get Vaccinated
  • Get your Flu Shot
