FRAMINGHAM – Framingham High head football coach Ed Mantie is leaving.
“I’ll be leaving my position as Head Football Coach of Framingham high school in order to accept the same position at another school. I will remain in the building as a physical education teacher,” announced Mantie tonight, June 30, in an email to families.
“This decision does not come easy and I do feel a great sense of sadness that I will be leaving such a phenomenal staff, players, parents and administration. There are several factors that went into this decision, but most importantly, it is one that is best for me and my family at this time. I truly believe that I am leaving Framingham football in a better place than when I arrived 4 years ago. I am in debt to everyone who played a part in this effort. I can not thank you enough for your investment in me and this program,” wrote Mantie.

Hired in April 2017, Mantie inherited a program that was struggling. There were years prior to his arrival that the Flyers didn’t even win a game, or just one game all season.
He came from Westwood High where he won a Tri-Valley League Large title in 2016.
Framingham was 1-10 in 2016 before Mantie’s arrival.
One of the biggest wins for Mantie while in Framingham, was the Flyers victory over rival Natick High at Fenway Park in 2018.
They finished the 2018 season at 6-5.
The Flyers were 4-7 in 2019, and lost to rival Natick High on Thanksgiving.
His last season was highly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. There was no fall football, but a shortened spring season in 2021.
Mantie did not say where he was headed, but SOURCE has learned it is B.C. High School.
“I am actively working to find a replacement for Coach Mantie to cause as little disruption to the program as possible,” wrote Framingham High Athletic Director Paul Spear to parents tonight, June 30. “We will hopefully have news so we can make as seamless a transition as possible and allow us to get back to preparing for the coming season.”
Spear told SOURCE he is entertaining the option of an interim head coach for the 2021 season, as the season starts in less than 2 months,
But Spear said his priority is to find “the right person for the program.”
