ASHLAND – Ashland Is United is holding a Juneteenth event at the Corner Spoit in Ashland on June 19.

The food, music, and conversation event is from noon to 2 p.m.

“Core to our mission is to build and strengthen bridges where they don’t exist and educate and expose people to new information and ideas. We hope you will join us for an informal gathering to connect and learn on June 19,” said organizers.

In addition to conversation and laughter, we also will be honoring and recognizing Juneteenth – a combination of “June” and “Nineteenth.”

It is a celebration of the day in 1865 that word of President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves, made its way to the state of Texas.

As allies, Ashland is United will share resources on black Americans’ struggle for independence and the disenfranchisement that has continued long after slavery ended, said organizers.
