FRAMINGHAM – The Callahan Center will host a program on growing African Violets on Thursday, April 22.
The free, virtual program starts at 1:30 p.m. and is for seniors age 55 and older.
Pre-registration is required by April 20.
Presenter Nancy Manozzi will help guide attendees through the care of these beautiful plants.
Though they are native to eastern tropical Africa, African violets are the most popular houseplant in the world.
The plants get their common name “African violet” from their superficial resemblance to true violets.

She will discuss their general care and culture, watering techniques, appropriate amount of light, temperature and humidity, type of fertilizer and soil. She’ll even show examples of plants in need of “help” and offer tips for nursing them
back to good health.
Manozzi is president of the Bay State African Violet Society, as well as the local All Seasons African Violet club. She has been growing African violets for more than 40 years.
African violets have long been associated with mothers and motherhood.
For this reason they have been a traditional gift to mothers in many cultures around the world.
