FRAMINGHAM – Agassiz Village announced its annual virtual 5K for kids will take place on May 23.

Agassiz welcomes the participation of individuals, companies, and community groups of all ages.

Participants can choose to run, jog, bike, or swim where and when they want to race. Proceeds will fund year-round programming and summer camp opportunities for children from under resourced Maine and Massachusetts communities.

Every $1,500 raised, will send one child to Agassiz’s 330-acre Poland, Maine Camp for a two-week summer session.

Although COVID has affected all of us, it has really impacted Agassiz families. Now more than ever, these children need a safe place to be a kid and develop the skills to thrive.

Agassiz Village is a nonprofit youth development organization whose mission is to “prepare youth for life’s journey.” Through our exceptional summer experience at our lakefront overnight camp and year-long programming, youth develop and practice critical leadership and life-shaping skills that will positively impact their futures. Each child is challenged to discover interests, uncover new skills, make lifetime friendships, and connect with inspiring mentors. In addition, teens in our year-round program are given support to complete high school and prepare for their college/career experience.

Agassiz helps kids from under-resourced Massachusetts communities, including cities like Framingham, Dorchester, Lowell, Lawrence, Worcester, Malden, and Boston.

For 86 years Agassiz Village has provided opportunities for thousands of kids throughout Massachusetts and Maine. Prior to coming to Agassiz, these extraordinary kids have experienced loss, trauma, poverty, homelessness, violence, parental separation and often have mild to moderate learning disabilities. Agassiz provides a respite, and for so many it is a home away from home.

“At Agassiz, I have both the safety from the streets and the freedom to be me. Agassiz is my safe haven,” said Agassiz camper Alex.

By participating in Agassiz’s 5K for Kids, participants will help to fund camp and year-long programming for kids in local at risk and under resourced communities. The dollars contributed will fund opportunities for these kids to develop and practice critical leadership and life-shaping skills that will change the trajectory of their lives and help them to “prepare for life’s journey.”
