HOLLYWOOD – A movie filmed in Framingham in 2018, received 6 Oscar nomination today, including one for best picture.

Sound of Metal is about a drummer who struggled with losing his hearing.

Written and directed by Darius Marder, Amazon Studios released the film in November 2020.

Scenes were filmed all over Massachusetts for about 3 months in 2018, including Boston, Cambridge, Lawrence, Malden, Framingham, etc. More than 150 Commonwealth residents were employed during the production.

Riz Ahmed, who plays Ruben, a drummer, in the film, was nominated for best actor. Ahmed is first Muslim nominated for Best Actor. He learned how to drum, and he learned American Sign Language for the film.

“Ruben is a drummer and one half of the duo Blackgammon along with his singer girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke). A former drug addict, he is sober for four years. Suddenly, he begins to lose his hearing. His sponsor makes him go meet Joe (Paul Raci), who leads a deaf community. With the help from them, Ruben struggles to accept his situation,” according to Amazon.

Other nominations for Sound of Metal included best original screenplay, best film editing, best sound, and best supporting actor (Raci).

The Academy Award nominations were announced today, March 15.

The Academy Awards will air on April 25.
