Mayor Spicer Issues Statement on Late School Committee Member Karen Foran Dempsey


FRAMINGHAM – On December 24, elected Framingham School Committee member and Framingham Disability Commissioner Karen Foran Dempsey died suddenly.

“The unfortunate and untimely passing of Ms. Karen Foran Dempsey came as a shock to all, however, her life serves as a testament to so many. She was a staunch advocate for the rights of the disenfranchised and worked on strategies to empower and educate. Her leadership to the Disability Commission and School Committee are commendable, which has impacted policies and practices. We had several conversations regarding legislation that laid the foundation for civil rights for the disabled and the importance diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community,” posted Mayor Yvonne Spicer in a statement on the City’s website.

“In one of the last conversations I had with Ms. Dempsey, we discussed the impact of her decades of advocacy and how she inspired others to serve. In the coming weeks, I will work with the School Committee, City Council, and members of the community to honor Ms. Dempsey‘s life and service to the City of Framingham,” wrote the Mayor in a statement.

“Finally, to Mark, her husband, sons, parents, siblings, and extended family, I send my deepest condolences. May your memories comfort you at this difficult time and know that Karen Foran Dempsey left an indelible impression on many and will be sorely missed,” wrote the Mayor.

The statement was posted on the City’s website after 12 on December 28, and also shared on Twitter.
