FRAMINGHAM – The 9-member elected School Committee will hold a special meeting on Monday night to discuss the 2019-2020 school calendar.
The meeting will take place remotely on Monday, April 13 at 9:15 p.m.
The School Committee is expected to take a vote to have remote learning during April vacation week, while the pandemic has physical schools closed through at least May 4.
The public school district began remote learning on April 6.
“I have requested a meeting with you to consider a proposal to eliminate the scheduled Spring Recess (April Vacation) in consideration of the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and the best use of all available remaining days in the 2019-2020 school year. … More specifically, a School Committee vote cancelling April Vacation would result in the cancellation of vacation on the four (4) scheduled, non-holiday days: Tuesday, April 21; Wednesday, April 22; Thursday, April 23; and Friday, April 24. Patriot’s Day is Monday, April
20th and that would remain as a non-school day as it is a State holiday,” wrote Framingham Superintendent Bob Tremblay.
“An affirmative vote to cancel April Vacation would establish these days as remote learning days. Consequently, the last day of the 2019-2020 academic year would be moved up four days from June 24, 2020 to June 18, 2020,” explained Tremblay in an email to the School Committee last week.

“In consideration of this proposal, on April 8, 2020 we released a survey in three languages (English, Spanish, and Portuguese) to solicit input from parents/guardians, students, staff, and administrators to gather the pulse of the community around this issue. … My interpretation of the data is that most respondents reason that discontinuing remote learning at this time for the purpose of taking a vacation would disrupt the routines to which students, families, and teachers are only now getting accustomed; after all, routines are essential for us all, and, given the restrictions on travel, we hope that everyone will appreciate the consistency,” wrote Tremblay.
