FRAMINGHAM – Senior guard Tyri Hampton (Fitchburg) sank a shot from the backcourt with .2 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the Rams were defeated 87-82 by Bridgewater State University Wednesday evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Athletic Center.

With the loss, Framingham State falls to 2-22 overall and 1-10 in the Conference.

Bridgewater is now 10-13 overall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Rams were paced offensively by Hampton who tallied a double double with a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Hampton connected on 2-of-4 from behind the arc including the clutch shot at the end of regulation.
  • Junior Cameren McCloud-Thomas (Springfield.) chipped in with 20 points on 8-of-14 from the floor and added six rebounds and five blocks.
  • Freshman John Kalton (Somerville) tallied 14 points with three assists, while sophomore Jared Gordon-Anderson (Framingham) finished the game with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals.
  • The Bears were led by a game-high 30 points from senior Ryan Carney (Easton). Carney connected on 9-of-19 from the floor and 10-of-15 from the line and finished with a near triple double as he grabbed 11 boards and handed out nine helpers.
  • Sophomore Alan Pettway (Worcester) tallied 19 points for the Bears on 5-of-8 from the floor including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. 
  • Senior Dimitri St. Louis (Brockton) and classmate Rayshon Ward (Fayettville, NC) were the final Bears in double figures with 15 and 13 points respectively.   
  • Prior to the game the Rams recognized Hampton, their lone senior, as part of Senior Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With the game tied 5-5, the Bears used a 10-2 run to open up a 15-7 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first.
  • The Bears led by as many as 10, 27-17, in the first on an Pettway three with 4:37 on the clock, but the Rams closed the gap with a 5-0 run capped by a three from Kalton to trail 27-22 with 3:04 remaining.
  • The two teams traded baskets before the Bears used a layup in traffic from Carney to lead 35-27 heading to the half.
  • The second half was back-and-forth the entire way with 10 ties and four lead changes and neither team leading by more than eight in the frame.
  • With the game tied, Bears used an 8-0 run to take a 67-59 lead with 5:36 on the clock, but the Rams countered with their own 8-0 spurt capped by four points from Hampton to retie the game at 67-67 with 3:30 on the clock.
  • The game remained tied until St. Louis sank one of two free throws with 1:43 on the clock to put the Bears up 68-67.
  • The Rams could not connect on their next two possessions and were forced to foul with 18.8 on the clock.  St. Louis sank both putting the Bears up three.
  • Sophomore Tajahn Joyner drove the lane and sank a quick two for the Rams cutting the gap back to one with 9.2 on the clock.
  • The Rams went for the steal, did not get it and were forced to foul again. Carney sank both with 4.8 on the clock setting the stage for Hampton’s shot.
  • Hampton inbounded to Joyner on the sideline and Joyner fed it right back to Hampton in the middle who took one dribble and lofted it from the back court tying the game at 72-72 with .2 left.
  • The game went to overtime and the Bears opened the frame with an 11-1 run and held off the Rams late for the victory.

     

    UP NEXT:                   

    The Rams close out the regular season on Saturday at Fitchburg State at 2 p.m., while the Bears also close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Worcester State at 3 p.m.
