Improper Disposal of Smoking Materials Focus of Marlborough Fire Investigation

MARLBOROUGH – State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and Marlborough Fire Chief Kevin J. Breen said the cause of the November 8, 2019 fire at 218 West Main Street in Marlborough is undetermined but not considered suspicious.

While the official cause will remain undetermined, the improper use and disposal of smoking materials is the most likely cause of the fire.

All five occupants of the home escaped, but three were transported to hospitals. One woman was severely injured but survived.

A pet dog perished in the fire.

Investigators determined that the fire started on a mattress in a second-floor bedroom. A woman was seen carrying water between her bedroom and the bathroom.

The Marlborough Fire Department, the Marlborough Police Department and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal jointly investigated the fire.
