LETTER: Seniors Deserve Their Own Space

FRAMINGHAM – I have been following the events surrounding the potential move of the Board of Health into the Callahan Center very closely.

I am upset by the way this was handled and the disrespect for our seniors.

Our seniors made Framingham what it is today. They imparted many lessons on those of us who grew up here, the most important being we need to look out for one another.

Our seniors should have their own space to socialize, learn and have fun. These are the goals of the Callahan Center. Framingham should also honor the intent of the very generous donation from Jack Blais, who believed in the value of a senior center.

Just because there is a legal loophole not to honor it, does not mean it is the right thing to do. We are better than that here in Framingham.

As a current member of the School Committee, I understand there is never enough space in our facilities for what we need to do. I also know the new Fuller Middle School construction is causing the Board of Health to move.

But what I also know is Framingham works best when we are honest and transparent, put political grudges and issues aside and get down to work.

I encourage Mayor Spicer and her team to continue to work with all the stakeholders to find a solution that works for our seniors and those who use the Board of Health.

It is the least we can do for our seniors.
