Variety Store To Lose Alcohol License For 1 Day

FRAMINGHAM – After selling alcohol to a minor, during a Framingham Police operation, a Framingham variety store has agreed to a suspension of its alcohol license.

The Framingham License Commission voted unanimously 4-0 to suspend the alcohol license for one day for Dom’s Variety Store on Hollis Street last night, Feb. 25.

Chair Adam Barnosky was not at the meeting. Vice Chair Cesar Monzon ran the meeting.

Framingham Police Lt. Jorge Ruiz told the Commission the Police Department announced they were going to conduct a compliance check operation with alcohol establishments in the Framingham Source and the MetroWest Daily News in October.

On Friday, November 9, 2018, an 18-year-old student purchased a 6-pack of Bud Light at the variety store, said Lt. Ruiz.

The Framingham Police conducted the operation over 8 weeks at 74 establishments with a liquor license and 57 establishments passed.

Three establishments came before the License Commission earlier this month, and three establishments came before the Commission Monday night. Several more establishments are expected to come before the Commission in March, from the 2018 operation the Police Department conducted.

The high school student, 18, under police supervision entered the
establishment without any forms of identification and purchased the 6-pack with money provided by the Framingham Police, explained Lt. Ruiz.

The variety store is located in downtown Framingham at 269 Hollis Street.

The owner told the Commission he “takes full responsibility,” and this was the first “mistake in 15 years” of operation.

Lt. Ruiz agreed, and said it was the first violation for the establishment.

Everybody was retrained, said the owner.

Lt. Ruiz said said the owner was cooperative during the investigation, and agreed to the one-day loss of license.

The variety store is required to pay a $300 fee to the City for the alcohol license violation investigation.

The license will be suspended on a Friday, to be determined, in the next 30 days.

The purpose of the underage compliance check operation is educational in
nature, said Lt. Ruiz.
