BURLINGTON – The Framingham High boys ice hockey team won its first-ever Ed Cahoon Memorial Cup tournament last night at the Ice Palace in Burlington.

The Flyers defeated the Mustangs of Medford High 5-2.

Hunter Balducci scored with about 8 minutes left in the opening period, to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. It held through the end of the first period.

Robbie Lopez scored twice in the second period to increase the Framingham lead to 3-1, after two periods.

Senior captain Nate Nichols scored 24 seconds into the third period to give the Flyers a 4-1 lead.

After another Mustangs goal, Nate James scored one more for Framingham to finish the scoring at 5-2.

Assists on the night went to senior captain Mike Tersoni, senior captain PJ Conzo, Tommy Chase, CJ Brown, and seniors Brian Tosi and BK Amini.

Framingham is now has a record of 17-3-2, under head coach Will Ortiz.

The Flyers won the Bay State Conference earlier this year going 11-0-1.

Next up is the selection for the Super 8 tournament on Saturday. Framingham is currently ranked #7 in the state. The top 6 should get in easily, and then four other teams will battle for the last two wild card spots.

Framingham if it doesn’t qualify for Super 8 will play in the Division 1 tournament. The Flyers went to the state final in Division 1, two years ago in Ortiz’ first year as head coach.
