Westfield State Defeats Framingham State 77-76

WESTFIELD – Framingham State sophomore Camille Desrochers  hit a trey with seven seconds to play to tie the game at 76 but Westfield State junior Chelsea Moussette hit 1- of 2 free throws, which proved to be just enough for the Owls to sneak past the Rams, 77-76 in a MASCAC women’s basketball game at the Woodward Center on Wednesday night.

With the win, The Owls are now 13-9 and 7-2 in the Conference.

With the loss, the Rams drop to 6-4 in the Conference and 14-8 overall.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams battled back and forth all night.  The Owls led 39-31 at the half, but Framingham took a 57-55 lead at the end of three quarters. 
  • Trailing 73-65 with just over five minutes to play the Rams went on an 11-3 run capped by the Desrochers’ three with seven seconds remaining. Westfield called timeout advanced the ball and the Rams went for the steal and were called for a foul setting up Moussette’s free throws.
  • After missing the first she hit the second, the Rams inbounded the ball and junior Emily Velozo drove to the basketball and put up a layup that looked to put the Rams ahead but rolled off the front of the rim as time expired.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Framingham State was hampered by the loss of 2018 MASCAC Player of the Year Mary Kate O’Day who exited with an injury in the second quarter after scoring eight points and grabbing six rebounds. 
  • The Rams were led by 17 points and 10 rebounds from Velozo while Tiphani Harris  added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Julia Sanborn  chipped in with 13 points and 15 boards. Desrochers finished with 14 points on 4-of-10 from long range.

  • Sophomore forward Melissa Gray led the Owls with 15 points, while Lucy Barrett added 13 and Moussette finished with 11.
  • Framingham outrebounded the Owls by a whopping 59-35 margin.  Westfield forced 31 Framingham turnovers, which the Owls converted into 30 points, and the Owls connected on 12 of 36 three-point attempts.
