NATICK – The American Girl store at the Natick Mall is closing in March.
It is one of two American Girl stores to close nationwide, announced the company today, January 31. The last day will be March 20, according to published reports.
The Natick Store, known as American Girl Boston, opened in November 2008 at the Natick Mall.
“While decisions that impact our associates, our customers and the community are always difficult, the closures are a necessary step to improve the overall health of our business and reinvest in key areas of growth, ” Wade Opland, vice president of retail for American Girl, said in a statement to a Minnesota newspaper.
The Mall of America American Girl store will close as well. It too opened in 2008.
American Girl, which is now owned by Mattel Inc. will keep 17 stores open, according to reports.
The closure will affect about 15 full-time and 30 part-time employees.
In 2017, Mattel said sales of American Girl had dropped by 30 percent.
In early 2018, American Girl had layoffs.
In April 2018, another 135 jobs were cut when an American Girl warehouse and call center was closed.
In June 1998, Mattel purchased the American Girl brand for $700 million
