FRAMINGHAM – The Framingham High Alpine Ski Team had its first race on Thursday, January 10 at Ski Ward in Shrewbsury.
Junior Andrew Keane and Senior Ben Fortin finished their first race in 27th and 28th place, with times of 24.48 and 24.56. They scored 22 and 21 points for the Flyers.
The girls did not score any points in their first race, but had strong showings by freshman Quentin Kobertz, Junior Marissa Drapeau, and Sophomore Katie Knox.
In their second race, Fortin finished in 21st with a time of 23.87, scoring an additional 28 points, and Keane finished 33rd with a time of 24.54, scoring 16 more points.
In her second race, Knox barely missed scoring points, coming in 51st with a time of 27.56.
This was the first time racing for many of the newcomers, as the team has almost doubled in size since last year.
Coach Roni Sue Bower said, “I am very proud of the team. The racers did extremely well considering the lack of on snow gate training. I am excited because our racers were asking lots of questions of how to race faster.”
Senior captain Ben Fortin said, “We have a young team and everyone seemed to handle the pressure of their first race really well. I am looking forward to seeing how they handle the steeper terrain of Blue Hills this upcoming Thursday.”
Other captain this year are Maddy Klein, Celia Warren, Casey Libuda, and James McIntire
The boys team is ahead of Easton, Newton North, Duxbury, and Milton. They are closely behind Westwood and and Lexington/Waltham.
The next Alpine Ski race is at Blue Hills on Thursday, January 18.
