FRAMINGHAM – Four students from Keefe Regional Technical School in Framingham, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Michelle Obama, former First Lady of the United States, at the TD Garden in Boston on Saturday, November 24.
Keefe Tech Guidance Counselor Krishna Soares attended “An Intimate Conversation with Michelle Obama” along with seniors Anderlande Gelin (Health Careers) and Anjeh Titafangmbung (Cosmetology) and juniors Fatima Cerin Gonzalez (Health Careers) and Liza Silva Brito (Design and Visual), all of Framingham.
Obama’s appearance was held as part of a 10-city book tour for her recently published memoir, Becoming.
“Michelle Obama was so inspiring to me because she reminded us that there are many routes to our destination. We don’t need to always follow the same path to reach our goals,” said Keefe senior Titafangmbung of her experience listening to Obama’s advice.
Junior Gonzalez said, “Michelle reminded me that it doesn’t matter if we are black or white or from a different country, we all share common experiences in life.”
Gelin, also a senior, said “Michelle inspired me when she told us to enjoy our youth, don’t stress too much about a defined career path while we are still so young, and to expand our knowledge through experiences.”
“Michelle was so casual, funny, and inspiring. I felt like she was a friend talking to me,” summed up junior Brito.
“Mrs. Obama is truly an inspirational woman, but the true magic of the evening was being able to witness first hand her ability to relate to all from young to old and across races. I am really thankful for ASCA for the opportunity to attend this event," said Keefe Tech Guidance Counselor Krishna Soares.
Soares was chosen by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) as one of five local school counselors selected through a random drawing to receive the opportunity to attend the event with some students.
According to ASCA, it is important to Obama that her events are accessible to as many people as possible, which is why in partnership with Live Nation, Mrs. Obama gave away a number of complimentary tickets to people around the country. ASCA was one of the designated organizations to offer tickets to Boston area members. ASCA supports school counselors’ efforts to help students focus on academic, career and social/emotional development and provides advocacy to school counselors around the globe.
