FRAMINGHAM – With its founder turning 80, Hoops and Homework will celebrate with a fundraiser and birthday bash to help the program sustain itself in the future.
Herb’s 80th Birthday Blowout Bash is set for November 7 at Braza Union House Grill on Route 135 from 5;30 to 8:30 p.m.
Suggested birthday contributions are between $50 and $1,000. RSVP to the birthday party at Birthday party RSVP
Hoops and Homework recently set an $80,000 fundraising goal, hoping to raise the money as founder Herb Chasan celebrates his 80th birthday on Oct. 28.
Hoops and Homework is an after-school and summer program that serves children in some of Framingham’s poorest neighborhoods.
Chasan, who founded the organization six years ago, said his birthday wish is for the charity to be sustainable.
Hoops and Homework has two Framingham locations, one on Interfaith Terrace and the other on Pusan Road. Census data shows the median household income in those neighborhoods is a little more than $29,000, making it one of the poorest areas in the state. On weekday afternoons, from 3-6 p.m., Hoops and Homework provides a safe space for children to work on homework, academics, play games, enjoy enrichment activities, participate in outdoor exercise and get a meal.
As of Oct. 9, the group had raised just over $15,000 toward its goal.
Donations included $5,000 from the family of former state Rep. Deborah Blumer, made in Blumer’s memory, and $6,000 from Digital Federal Credit Union.
