League of Women Voters, MetroWest Daily News Respond to Complaint By Republican On Candidates Forum

The following is a press release sent to Framingham Source from the League of Women Voters chapter in Framingham.

FRAMINGHAM – Stephanie Deeley, president of the Framingham League of Women Voters and Anne Brennan, editor in chief of the MetroWest Daily News, met with Tom Blandford on Wednesday August 15th to discuss his participation at the forum. The League and the Daily News are co-sponsoring the event.

Blandford is the only Republican candidate in the 6th Middlesex District state representative race. The other candidates are all Democrats.
During our meeting on Wednesday, we explained that under League of Women Voters rules, forums can only be held for contested races. Blandford is running uncontested in the Republican primary.
On Sept. 4 voters will choose which of the four Democratic candidates will go on to challenge Blandford.
We invited Blandford to come to the event and we would introduce him to the audience and explain why he was not participating in the debate. We encouraged him to hand out information about himself and his campaign outside the forum venue. He was satisfied with this arrangement and thanked us as we parted company.
It is puzzling now to see that Blandford is making claims of unfairness when we reached out to him and together came up with a way to include him while still following League rules. We are surprised that he changed his mind on the agreement we reached but did not reach out to us to let us know that.
