The following is a press release from the Tom Blandford campaign
FRAMINGHAM – The Framingham Unit of the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts has denied Republican Tom Blandford’s request to participate in candidate forum for the write-in candidates running in primary elections for the 6th Middlesex Seat in the State House of Representatives. The candidate forum will take place on August 20 and will be open to the public.
Blandford has appealed to unit president, Stephanie Deeley, in hopes of participating in the forum.
Deeley has sited that the August 20 forum is only for candidates in races that have more than one person running. There are four democrats running for the seat.
However, the candidate forum will be open to all residents, not just Democrats, putting Blandford at a significant disadvantage with independent or un-enrolled voters who might be present at the forum. Name recognition and access are crucial for all write-in candidates.
“The League of Women Voters is supposed to be non-partisan but if that were true then why am I not invited to participate? We know that independent or un-enrolled voters are the largest voting bloc in Framingham and shouldn’t they hear from all write-in candidates? This is supposed to be a democracy but I am beginning to feel that the playing field is only level if you are a democrat,” said Blandford. “Let the people be actually informed so on September the 4 they can make a better and much more fair decision. I am not in this race to start any trouble but I am in this race so that the middle class, the elderly, and the disenfranchised people can have a voice at the state house but their trying to keep us out of the process!”
