LETTER: An Open Letter to the Dedicated Professionals at the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office

My name is Donna Patalano, and I am running to be the next Middlesex District Attorney because I believe in you.

Over the course of my career, I’ve worked with hundreds of judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys across Massachusetts. Without fail, they have praised the integrity and dedication of the people of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office (MDAO). You have earned your reputation for excellence, and your commitment to justice speaks in your work every day.

After speaking to current and former members of your team, I know that many who used to take pride in working for MDAO no longer do. They tell me that they once felt confident about the training they received, and how they were supported in their professional development.

Thoughtful and innovative leaders like Scott Harshbarger, Tom Reilly, Martha Coakley, and Gerry Leone helped to guide your work. They built an office where people felt proud to be part of a team that was squarely committed to justice.

Your former colleagues tell me how much they appreciated the DA’s words of recognition and how deeply they trusted the judgment and decisions of their leaders. They felt trusted. If they made an honest mistake, they felt supported in how they were guided to correct course. In short, they tell me about an office that was an excellent place to work, to grow, and to serve.

I am running to help restore the MDAO to the level of excellence it once had.

I want to lead an office where you feel appreciated and supported, where you have the opportunity to grow and develop your skills no matter your role, and where you will feel confident that we are all working together toward the common goal of justice.

With your help, I want to rebuild strong relationships with our community partners and law enforcement.

I understand that with change, there will always be a feeling of uncertainty. Rest assured, however, that I am not looking to contribute to the MDAO’s turnover rate, which is the
highest in the state and twice the average for DAs’ offices in Massachusetts. My aim is to reduce it.

Please take a look at my website, Facebook page, and Twitter. Come, or send your friends and family, to my public events. Call me at 857–529–7081 to learn more about my vision for what we can do together.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.
Donna Patalano
