UPDATED: List of Boards, Committees, and Commission Framingham Mayor Spicer Appoints

FRAMINGHAM – Under the new City Charter, the Framingham Mayor is responsible for nominating more than 100 individuals for volunteer boards, committees, and commissions.

The City Solicitor advised that current members of volunteer boards, committees, and commission can continue to serve until a qualified successor is approved and sworn in, even if after June 30, 2018.

The City said licenses or permits, such as the Licensing Board, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Board of Health will require individuals interested in volunteering to complete an “application packet.”

The deadline to apply for boards, committees, and commissions was June 1, 2018.

The City posted RFPs for some Boards and Commissions, like Z0ning Board of Appeals and the Conservation Commission, but not for all volunteer positions on its website.

The City of Framingham has almost 70,000 residents.

The Mayor’s office in a memo to the 11-member City Council said “the process and vacancies were publicized as follows: On May 3, 2018 the City of Framingham issued a press release inviting the community to apply for boards, commission and committee positions. The release was distributed to all members of the City Council, as well as all of our media contacts and posted on the home page of the FraminghamMa.gov website. An email notification was issued to the City’s 14,528 “Notify Me” subscribers. The City’s staff utilized social media to advertise the vacancies on the boards, commissions and committees. A secondary press release was issued on May 29, 2018 to the City Council and our media contacts reminding all existing board, commission and committee members that they must reapply if they wish to continue their service to the community; it was also emailed to all of our email subscribers, posted on the home
page of the FraminghamMa.gov website and shared on social media.”

Editor’s Note: SOURCE received just one press release on the appointment process on June 1.

Many of the boards, committees, and commissions had few applicants.

In some cases, only the current members applied.

No Board or Committee had more than 17 applicants in total.

For example, the 7-member Community Economic Development Committee had four applicants for seven seats. All four applicants were current members.

As some boards, committees and commissions still have vacancies, residents of Framingham can contact the Mayor’s office on how to apply.
