FRAMINGHAM – There will be a lot of Framingham residents glued to their televisions on Sunday afternoon, June 17, as Brazil will battle Switzerland in its first 2018 World Cup soccer game.
The game is at Rostov Arena in Russia and will be aired live at 2 p.m. Eastern time.
Brazil is one of the tournament favorites, along with defending champion Germany.
Brazil and Switzerland are both in Group E.
The 5-time world champions have only six players with World Cup experience in their ranks, but the Brazilians have not lost an opening match since 1934. Brazil has won 16 of their 20 opening matches at the World Cup.
Brazil is looking for redemption since its 7-1 loss to Germany in the 2014 Brazil World Cup in the semifinals.
Switzerland is no USA, which didn’t make the roster of 32 2018 World Cup teams for the first time since 1986.
The Swiss national team has lost just once since early Euro 2016. They are ranked 6th in the world. In 2010, they beat the eventual champions Spain in 2010 in South Africa. Switzerland tied 1–1 with Spain, and beat Japan 2-0 in its warm-up matches.
This is the first game out of Group E for the 2018 World Cup.
Alisson Becker, known by just his first name, is expected to be in goal for Brazil Sunday. He is also a goalie for the Italian Club team Roma.
Philippe Coutinho, Thiago Silva, and Neymar are players to watch for Brazil. Neymar was injured in the semifinal loss to Germany 4 years ago.
Xherdan Shaqiri is the player to watch for the Swiss.
