An open letter to Framingham Mayor Yvonne Spicer
Framingham Teachers Association members at McCarthy, Brophy & Woodrow Wilson Elementary Schools were shocked by your recent comments at the May 16th school committee meeting following the DSAC report.
You commented: “How are they pairing with other teachers, for example, in our schools that have been level 1; do they have an opportunity to pair and observe them and look at best practice in this mix?”
Mayor Spicer, is it your impression that the educators at Brophy, McCarthy & Woodrow Wilson Elementary Schools do not know or use best practice?
You went on to say, “I strongly believe that if they can see what it looks like perhaps they can learn some skill sets there.”
Mayor Spicer, we object to your evaluation of our Brophy, McCarthy and Woodrow Wilson educators as not having the same skill set as other educators in this great district. You are aligning student achievement with teacher performance – this is wrong.
The educators at these schools are just as highly qualified as every educator in this district and possess all the necessary skills to do this work. This is why they come to school each day.
The educators at these three school are working tirelessly, without recognition, to support their students. They are uniquely qualified for this work. It is hard work and they are willing participants in creating the strong learning environment their students deserve. These
educators deserve your thanks, not your hurtful comments.
